Less posing. More room for what was not planned.

I was in New York for a job and had room for a few more sessions. Maya answered the call. She was a dancer and had already worked with many photographers. She knew exactly what she could do in front of a camera.

That was precisely what I did not want this time.

We photographed in her apartment in Manhattan. Less posing, less production, less of what reliably looks like a good photograph. I wanted to keep it quiet and see what happened when Maya did not have to perform anything.

Her openness caught me off guard at first. Not because it was loud. Quite the opposite. The entire apartment spoke very naturally about bodies and nudity through its pictures, objects and all the small details in the room. None of it seemed arranged for me. It was simply her world.

She moved. I tried to keep up. Honestly, for the first few minutes she was a step ahead of me. Good. Photographs rarely get better when the photographer pretends to have everything under control.

The room did not explain her. Neither did I. It simply gave her movement somewhere to land. I paid attention.

This intimate portrait session with dancer Maya was photographed in her Manhattan apartment in New York. The story moves between quiet observation, physical movement and the details of a space that spoke naturally about bodies and nudity. Rather than adding more poses, Bjørn Lexius left room for Maya’s physical intelligence and the unexpected.
